Legal Clinic

ALO clinics will be on a reduced summer schedule from May to August.  Clinics will be held once per month. Please check our online calendar for announcements and updates. We will continue to respond to intake forms and emails as best we can.

Do you have questions about copyright?  Have you been invited to submit work to a competition or contest? Are you wondering whether you need a release to take photos of a public building? Are you confused by the language in a contract? Are you being asked to make representations, warranties or indemnify someone (and not sure what that means)? Are you hoping to use recorded music in your play? Are you a Board member wondering how to change your by-laws?

At the ALO clinic, we can answer all these questions and more.

You can make an appointment to meet with a lawyer at the ALO clinic just by filling out an intake form and making a donation.

WHO

The ALO Clinic is run by volunteer lawyers and law students. All of our lawyers have expertise in copyright, intellectual property and entertainment law.

WHAT

Clinics are scheduled once the intake form is received. A volunteer lawyer will meet with you for 30 minutes. The clinic is supported solely by donations. Any amount, no matter how small, helps.

Our lawyers can answer most of the legal questions related to your artistic practice. Please read our FAQ for more information on what legal questions we can and cannot answer.

WHEN and WHERE

Clinics are held twice a month at the Alliance for Arts: Suite 100 - 938 Howe Street (between Smithe and Nelson), in Vancouver.

Clinic dates are announced on our calendar.

Only clients with confirmed appointments will be seen by ALO lawyers.

HOW

To make an appointment, fill out an intake form and, if you can, make a donation.  Our law student coordinator will get back to you in a week with an appointment day and time, subject to the availability of participating lawyers. Best efforts are made to match artists in particular disciplines with lawyers who have expertise in those areas.  In the meantime, you can always check our database for information.
